Smart Chassis Brakes: Brake Spider Anchor Bore Ovalization & Torque (2026)
The brake spider - also called the torque plate - is the heavy forged or cast component welded or bolted to the trailer axle housing. It serves as the mechanical anchor for the entire foundation brake assembly, including the brake shoes, anchor pins, S-cam, and return springs.
Over millions of severe braking cycles, two critical failure modes develop. First, the anchor pin bores in the spider experience progressive egg-shaping, known as ovalization. When bore ovality exceeds 0.040 inches, the pins no longer maintain proper alignment. Second, the spider-to-axle mounting bolts loosen due to vibration, torque reaction, and weld fatigue in the flange area.
The catastrophic sequence is well documented in fleets running high-mileage dry van and flatbed trailers. Under heavy braking - especially when loaded to 80,000 lbs and descending grades - the entire brake spider twists relative to the axle. This twist jams the S-cam, over-stresses or breaks the return springs, and locks the wheel into a permanent highway skid. The result is flat-spotting, tire blowouts, loss of control, and in the worst cases, jackknife incidents that trigger FMCSA interventions and high insurance claims.
Traditional visual inspection through wheel slots or annual hub teardowns cannot reliably detect these conditions before failure. This is why leading carriers are moving to sensor-driven predictive maintenance integrated with their core TMS platforms such as Truckmate, McLeod, or TMW.
Strong Tower Consulting developed the SpiderGuard™ architecture in partnership with Exspeedite's CheckPoint platform (https://exspeeditecheckpoint.com/login.php). The system deploys three classes of sensors at each wheel end:
CheckPoint monitors anchor bore ovalization in real time. When ovality trends approach safety thresholds, the system automatically creates a maintenance task in Exspeedite TMS, applies a red-tag status to the trailer asset record, and prevents dispatch via EDI 204 load tender acceptance until the spider is replaced or re-bushed. This closed-loop process eliminates the gap between condition monitoring and operational control that has plagued traditional PM programs.
The architecture also records torque verification data for each mounting bolt. This allows maintenance teams to catch loose hardware or weld fatigue long before rotational displacement occurs under emergency braking. Integration with SQL-based TMS platforms (McLeod, TMW, Truckmate) ensures that brake spider health becomes a visible data point in driver settlement calculations, fuel surcharge logic, and detention reporting workflows.

Eliminating twisted spiders, ovalized bores, and sudden wheel lockups requires moving beyond reactive maintenance. The CheckPoint SpiderGuard solution delivers continuous structural health monitoring of the brake spider - the single most critical and overlooked component in the foundation brake system.
By combining Hall-effect bore measurement, torque telemetry, and automated maintenance workflows, fleets achieve measurable reductions in CVSA violations, tire costs, and catastrophic incidents. The data flows directly into existing business processes - from driver settlements and fuel surcharge calculations to detention claims and EDI 210 invoicing.
This is not another bolt-on sensor package. It is a complete closed-loop safety and maintenance architecture purpose-built for commercial trailer operations that already run sophisticated TMS platforms.
Independent by design. Strong Tower Consulting, LLC and Exspeedite LLC are separately organized sister companies under common ownership (separate EINs; liability firewall). Founded in 2008 in Minnesota by Scott Elliott, we have been in business for more than 18 years. We lead chassis telematics. Carriers never have to buy our software to benefit from our expertise and independent guidance.

CheckPoint uses dual-axis Hall-effect sensors mounted on the brake spider that continuously track the relative position of the anchor pins during each brake application. The system calculates eccentric play to 0.001 inches and reports ovalization trends in real time to the Exspeedite TMS. No disassembly is required. Data is transmitted wirelessly to the gateway and synchronized with your primary dispatch system.
Yes. SpiderGuard torque-angle transducers monitor mounting bolt preload and angular displacement. The system flags torque loss or micro-movement before catastrophic failure, triggering an automated red-tag in the maintenance workflow. This early warning prevents the rotational displacement that leads to S-cam binding and wheel lockup.
Absolutely. Dynamic braking torque telemetry combined with bore ovality data identifies asymmetric loading that leads to tapered drum wear. Alerts are pushed to both the shop tablet and the carrier's primary TMS (Truckmate, McLeod, or TMW) before the next dispatch. This prevents premature drum and lining replacement while protecting against out-of-service violations.
When CheckPoint detects anchor bore ovality exceeding 0.040 inches or torque loss beyond threshold, Exspeedite automatically creates a maintenance work order, assigns a red-tag status to the trailer in the asset register, and prevents EDI 204 load acceptance until the spider is replaced or re-bushed. The process is fully integrated with your existing SQL schema and business rules.
